JOINTS and their CLASSIFICATIONS

Arthrology-science of joint structure, function, and dysfunction

Kinesiology-the study of musculoskeletal movement

Joint names are typically derived from the names of the bones involved at the joint

temporal mandibular (jaw), glenohumeral joint (elbow), radioulnar joint (wrist), tibial femoral (knee)

Joints classified according to the manner in which the adjacent bones are bound to each other, with differences in how freely the bones can move

Three major joint categories:

  1. Fibrous joints
  2. Cartilaginous joints
  3. Synovial joints

Functional Classification of Joints:

Amount of movement allowed
