Respiratory System Anatomy

The human respiratory system is a series of organs responsible for taking in OXYGEN (O2) and expelling CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2).

The primary organs of the respiratory system are the lungs, which carry out this exchange of gases as we breathe.

The bronchial tubes are lined with CILIA (like very small hairs) that have a wave-like motion. This motion carries MUCUS (sticky phlegm or liquid) upward and out into the throat, where it is either coughed up or swallowed.

Surfactant is a mixture of fat and proteins made in the lungs.

Surfactant coats the alveoli (the air sacs in the lungs where oxygen enters the body).

This prevents the alveoli from sticking together when you exhale (breathes out).
